Our Philosophy

Character and Judgment on the Water

FirstCast is built on the belief that fishing is a vehicle for developing good character and sound judgment. Our program goes beyond the rod and reel — every session is a deliberate opportunity to practice integrity, personal responsibility, and ethical decision-making that young anglers carry far beyond the waterline.

Conservation Stewardship

Prioritizing the health of Florida's aquatic ecosystems — teaching youth to give back more than they take from every body of water.

Personal Responsibility

Recognizing that "unregulated" does not mean "unprotected." Every angler bears a duty to the ecosystem regardless of current regulations.

Integrity in Action

Committing to honest species identification and the ethical treatment of all fish encountered — releasing what is uncertain.

Community Leadership

Serving as local conservation ambassadors at marina hubs, building a culture of responsible angling in every community we reach.

The Curriculum

Building Character Through the Sport of Fishing

Three core educational modules that build knowledge, ethics, and skill in every young angler we mentor.

01

The "Unregulated" Challenge

Bag limits apply even without specific rules

Participants learn that the absence of a species-specific regulation does not grant unlimited harvest. Default bag limits always apply, and the presence of invasive species like Lionfish presents a unique opportunity — these should be actively removed to restore ecosystem health.

Key Lesson: Default bag limits apply to all species.

02

Legal Gear and Ethical Harvest

FWC-permitted methods only

This module focuses on Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) permitted angling methods — hook and line, cast nets, and other approved gear. Prohibited methods are strictly and explicitly forbidden. Participants understand not just what is legal, but why ethical gear selection matters for population sustainability.

Key Lesson: Know the law, respect the ecosystem.

03

Species Identification & The Pillar of Integrity

100% certainty before harvest

Integrity is identifying a fish with absolute certainty before it leaves the water. This is especially critical for restricted and managed species like Gray Triggerfish. When uncertain, the answer is always to release. This module establishes identification skills as a foundational element of ethical angling and personal character.

Key Lesson: If in doubt, let it out.

Saturday Morning Meetups

Weekend Operations at Marina Hubs

Our Saturday sessions are structured, purposeful, and community-driven — held at strategic marina vending locations throughout coastal Florida.

Phase 1

Check-In

7:00 – 7:30 AM

Register youth participants and confirm signed liability waivers. Gear is inspected and assigned, and safety briefings are delivered to all attendees.

Phase 2

Instruction

7:30 – 8:15 AM

Deliver a character-focused educational module drawn from the core curriculum — covering species ID, legal methods, or conservation ethics, with an emphasis on good judgment and personal responsibility tailored to the session.

Phase 3

Supervised Angling

8:15 – 10:30 AM

Active fishing at the marina with direct mentor oversight. Emphasis on proper casting technique, real-time species identification, and ethical catch-and-release practice.

Phase 4

Cleanup — "Stash the Trash"

10:30 – 11:00 AM

Execute an FWC-aligned cleanup of monofilament line and debris around the marina. Participants reinforce the conservation principles learned during the session through direct action.
